HEAT INDEX GUIDELINES

HEAT INDEX GUIDELINES

As you are probably aware, the forecast for early this week is for very warm weather. Here are some guidelines to help keep players and spectators as safe as possible:

  • Players should hydrate starting 36 hours before a game, drinking 8 glasses of water within a 24-hour period. Waiting until game time, or just prior to the game, is insufficient.

  • Players should bring a sports drink to the field (not water), as they need to replace the electrolytes they will lose via sweat. Water alone is insufficient.

  • Coaches will ask the referee for a hydration break in each half, and the referees will grant them under league rules.

  • Parents are encouraged to watch from a shaded area if possible, and should also ensure they have something to drink.

  • Team practices should be kept to light activities

  • Having some ice and cold washcloths in a cooler is encouraged.

If the heat index gets too extreme, matches may be cancelled by the league (clubs and teams cannot cancel them), but do not assume that will happen and have your child prepared to play.
